The news of Micsrosoft buying Skype has certainly sparked off opinions and controversy. For some time I lamented joining Skype and using it for my wedding photography business, but I couldn’t envision how it would integrate into my current routine. I never did join, and now I am going to sit on the sidelines and watch how this acquisition plays out.
In many instances the atmosphere and allure that surrounds tech start-ups is lost when they are gobbled up by large corporations. Either the original business model is completely changed, or the initiative to monetize the unit impacts the user base. In the end it all comes down to money and the desire for the parent company to recoup their investment and add a new revenue stream.
With the end user impacted, the customer base can essentially disappear and as the parent company struggles with how to maintain the profitability of the unit it may further make changes, in some cases the wrong changes.
It is not clear what impact the acquisition will have on Skype, but hopefully it will maintain the user experience.
